How to schedule TikTok posts, and what TikTok's API allows

Schedule TikTok videos and photo posts: TikTok's own scheduler, direct posting versus inbox drafts from other apps, privacy and disclosure choices, and music.

Posting to TikTok at the right moment usually means posting at an awkward one: lunch hour, late evening, or the weekend you promised to keep free. Scheduling solves that. You prepare the video when you have time and it goes out when your audience is watching.

There are two ways to schedule TikTok posts: inside TikTok itself, or through a scheduling tool that connects to TikTok's official API. They work differently, and TikTok sets clear rules for the second one. This guide explains both, so you know what to expect before you plan a month of content.

Option 1: schedule inside TikTok

TikTok's own upload page on the web lets you choose a time instead of posting immediately. It is free and works well if TikTok is the only platform you post to.

Its limits show up when you run several channels. Each post is set up on TikTok alone, so the same video still has to be uploaded again to Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Facebook. The schedule also lives inside one TikTok account, which makes it harder for a team or an agency to see everything planned across clients.

Check TikTok's help pages for how far ahead you can schedule there today; it is TikTok's rule to set, and it can change.

Option 2: schedule through a tool

A scheduling tool connects to your TikTok account through TikTok's own sign-in page. You approve the permissions, and the tool receives an access key. It never sees your password.

TikTok gives such apps two ways to send content:

  • Direct post. The tool publishes the video or photo post to your profile at the time you chose, with your caption and settings.
  • Send to inbox (draft). The tool sends the media to your TikTok inbox. You get a notification, open the TikTok app, and finish the post there, adding the caption, sounds or effects yourself.

Drafts are useful when you want TikTok's in-app editing, such as a trending sound, before posting. Direct posting is what you want for a true "set it and forget it" schedule.

What you can post

Through the API, a tool can publish:

  • Videos, up to 10 minutes or your account's own maximum, with a cover frame you choose;
  • Photo posts, one to 35 photos as a swipeable carousel, with a title, a description and a cover photo; TikTok can add music to photo posts automatically.

What the API does not allow is just as important:

  • no comments or first comments;
  • no choosing a specific music track;
  • no Stories or polls, and no mixing photos and video in one post;
  • no custom cover image for videos (you choose a frame from the video instead).

The choices TikTok makes you take every time

TikTok is strict about consent. For every post published through an app, TikTok requires that you choose the settings; the app may not decide for you.

Who can view

You pick who can see the post from the options your own account allows, for example everyone, friends, or only you. A tool must not preselect this. If an option is switched off in your TikTok settings, it stays unavailable in the tool too.

Interactions

You choose whether to allow comments, and for videos whether to allow Duet and Stitch. Again, anything you turned off in TikTok stays off.

Disclosure

If a post promotes something, TikTok asks you to say so:

  • Your brand: you are promoting your own business. TikTok labels the post Promotional content.
  • Branded content: you are promoting someone else in exchange for something of value. TikTok labels it Paid partnership.

There is also an AI-generated content label for videos made or heavily changed with AI. When you publish directly, you agree to TikTok's Music Usage Confirmation, and to its Branded Content Policy if you mark branded content.

Music for business accounts

Business accounts on TikTok work with a more limited, commercially licensed music library, because using popular songs in advertising needs different licences. Do not add copyrighted songs in an editing app to get around it: TikTok can mute or remove the video.

For scheduled posts, two approaches work:

  1. Add a licensed sound or your own audio before you upload the video.
  2. Send the video to your inbox and add a sound from TikTok's commercial library in the app.

New apps and TikTok's audit

Every new app that posts to TikTok has to pass an audit by TikTok. Until it does, TikTok only lets that app post privately: the post is visible to you only, from accounts set to private, for a small number of users a day. This is TikTok's rule for every new app, not a setting you can change.

Watchpost is in this position until TikTok completes its audit, and the composer says so clearly before you schedule. We will update the app as soon as public posting is allowed.

A simple weekly routine

  1. Batch film on one day: three to five short vertical clips.
  2. Write captions for each, up to 2,200 characters, with a clear first line.
  3. Choose settings deliberately: who can view, comments, Duet and Stitch, and disclosure.
  4. Schedule at the times your audience watches. Your own analytics are a better guide than generic charts; see how to find your best time to post.
  5. Review once a week: which videos were watched and shared, and which times worked.

TikTok also limits how many posts one account can publish through all apps combined each day, so a steady rhythm beats a burst of uploads.

Posting the same video elsewhere

Most short videos also work as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Facebook Reels. In Watchpost you upload the video once, select TikTok and the other channels, and adjust the caption and settings in each platform's tab. Our guide to repurposing one video into Shorts, Reels and TikTok covers the details, and the TikTok page lists every option.

Quick answers

Can I schedule TikTok posts for free? Yes, inside TikTok on the web. A tool helps when you post to several platforms or work as a team.

Will a scheduled post get less reach? We have seen no statement from TikTok that posts published through its official API are treated differently. Focus on the content and the timing.

Can I edit a TikTok post after it is published? Not through the API. Check the caption before you schedule.
